Did you know that you could be hurting you back when you lay down to sleep? The wrong sleeping position could be making you wake up in pain or experience pain later on in the day. As Gahanna chiropractors, we meet a lot of people who don’t realize how important their sleeping position is! Considering you spend almost 1/3 of your life sleeping, we would say it is pretty important. Here are some tips on the best sleep positions for a better night’s sleep and less back pain.
- Don’t sleep on your stomach. This is the worst position for you! When you sleep on your belly, your lower back is compressed and your head and neck are forced into an unnatural position. You can modify your position by placing a pillow underneath your abdomen and pelvis to help your back stay in the right position.
- Sleep with a pillow between your legs. Sleeping on your side can help relieve back pain and tension, but it is not good to sleep with one leg elevated higher than the other. This can put too much pressure on your hips. Instead, stack your legs on top of each other and place a pillow in between to help keep your hips aligned.
- Try sleeping with a pillow under your legs if you’re sleeping on your back. You can better help your back by placing a pillow underneath your knees while you sleep. This will allow you to maintain the natural curve of your spine even while you sleep.
